Overview The primary responsibility of this role is to act as an AWS Solution Architect on medium-to-large opportunities, covering solution design, cloud migration and modernisation, pre-sales and RFI/RFP solutioning, estimation and cost modelling, and architecture governance through to production. Enterprises increasingly require AWS solutions that are highly available, secure, cost optimised and defensible to their own architecture boards — not reference diagrams that fail at implementation. The ideal candidate will bring 16–17 years of software design, consulting and cloud architecture experience, with the seniority to advise client stakeholders at CXO and Enterprise Architecture level and the technical depth to validate that what has been proposed can actually be built and run within budget. The successful candidate will combine AWS architecture depth, migration and modernisation experience, commercial and estimation judgement, and the communication ability to present complex technical options concisely to business and technical audiences. Key Responsibilities AWS Solution Architecture & Design Authority • Design highly available, scalable, fault-tolerant and cost-optimised AWS architectures aligned to AWS Well-Architected principles. • Define target-state and reference architectures across compute, networking, storage, data, integration and security domains. • Act as design authority — conducting design reviews with client SMEs, holding the non-functional bar, and documenting architecture decisions. • Architect secure-by-default patterns covering IAM, network segmentation, encryption, certificate management and perimeter controls. • Make and justify build-versus-buy and service-selection decisions, including AWS-native versus third-party trade-offs. • Translate business and technology challenges raised by client stakeholders into implementable cloud solutions. Pre-Sales, RFI / RFP & Estimation • Own the technical solution in RFI, RFP and RFQ responses — solution narrative, architecture, assumptions, risks, differentiators and win themes. • Lead discovery workshops and technical due diligence to establish current-state landscape and modernisation options. • Build cost models, effort estimates, TCO/ROI analysis and business cases with projected hard and soft savings; validate costing data and assumptions. • Develop proofs-of-concept, technical demonstrations and pilot solutions to de-risk proposed architectures. • Present transformation strategies and architecture options to CXO, VP and Enterprise Architecture stakeholders. • Partner with account teams, AWS stakeholders and delivery leaders to shape pursuit strategy and value propositions. Cloud Migration & Modernisation • Assess on-premises workloads and produce cloud recommendations, migration R-pattern selection and move-group planning with supporting rationale. • Lead migration and modernisation of application and database estates to AWS at portfolio scale. • Architect database migration and cutover strategy, including sizing, replication, CDC and disaster-recovery design. • Modernise legacy workloads toward microservices, serverless, containerised and API-led patterns. • Identify and deliver cost-optimisation opportunities and reusable patterns that can be applied across accounts. Automation, Infrastructure-as-Code & Governance • Design and deliver Infrastructure-as-Code using AWS CDK, CloudFormation or Terraform, including reusable, standards aligned components. • Automate environment provisioning, CI/CD pipelines and monitoring to improve operational efficiency. • Enforce change management through version-controlled repositories, code review and rollback mechanisms. • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineering teams; act as escalation point on architectural and delivery risk. • Build reusable accelerators, estimation templates and architecture assets that improve delivery consistency. Qualifications Experience • 16–17 years in software design, development, consulting or cloud architecture, with substantial time in a hands-on AWS architecture role. • Proven delivery of production AWS architectures that are highly available, secure, fault-tolerant and cost-optimised. • Portfolio-scale migration experience — assessing, designing and migrating application or database estates from on premises to AWS. • Demonstrated pre-sales and solutioning contribution, including RFI/RFP response, estimation, cost modelling and client presentation. • Experience advising senior client stakeholders and translating business objectives into architecture. • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code and automated provisioning at scale. • Experience leading or providing technical guidance to cross-functional engineering teams. • Delivery experience across multiple industries and geographies, including onsite/offshore engagement models. • Working experience with Agile delivery methods. Education • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent discipline; equivalent professional experience considered in lieu. Preferred Skills • Core AWS services — VPC and subnetting, EC2, ALB/NLB, S3, API Gateway, CloudFront, Lambda, IAM, RDS, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, SNS, Systems Manager, VPC endpoints and PrivateLink. • AWS data and analytics services — Redshift, Glue, Athena, EMR, Kinesis, QuickSight, DMS/SCT; exposure to Snowflake or Databricks. • Infrastructure-as-Code and scripting: AWS CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform, Python, PowerShell. • Cloud security architecture: IAM design, network hardening, firewall and WAF, encryption and key management. • Database breadth across relational and NoSQL — Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Aurora, DocumentDB or MongoDB. • Secondary cloud depth in Microsoft Azure or another hyperscaler for hybrid and multi-cloud design. • Cost modelling, guesstimation tooling, TCO/ROI analysis and cloud financial management. • Source control and tooling: Git, Bitbucket, JIRA, Confluence. • Outstanding written and verbal communication, with the ability to present complex technical proposals concisely. • The candidate should have a PE/VC mentality — capital-efficient, outcome-obsessed, intolerant of gold-plating. Bonus Points • AWS certifications — Solutions Architect Professional or Associate, Security Specialty, Data Analytics Specialty. • Additional cloud certifications — Azure Solutions Architect Expert, OCI Architect, or equivalent multi-cloud credentials. • Agile credentials such as SAFe Agilist or equivalent. • Experience migrating packaged enterprise workloads — Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, retail or ERP stacks — to cloud. • Legacy modernisation heritage (mainframe, COBOL, DB2 or comparable) informing migration strategy. • Domain depth in BFSI, payments, retail, healthcare, energy, manufacturing or travel and hospitality.
